BCC Season Review 2022

The 2022 cricket season proved to be a successful one for Babbacombe Cricket Club, our first X1 gaining promotion back to the ‘C’ Division of the DCL and our second team maintaining its status quo despite being narrowly relegated.
The first team had been pushing for promotion the previous year and this time it was achieved by finishing in second position, 13 points clear of third placed Plymstock, despite suffering a shock home defeat by Plympton on a dramatic last day of the season when Plymstock also lost! After losing to eventual champions Brixham at the start of the second half of the season, Babbacombe embarked on a six match winning streak, led by skipper Rob Redding, scoring runs consistently in the middle order, and the flamboyant Jinu again scoring freely and prolifically. Opening bowler Ben Passmore continued his season by season progress, finishing as the division’s leading wicket-taker with 37 victims. Other positive factors included the much improved availability of players; the emergence of youngsters Henry Stubbs, Nathan Snape and Jack Allcock; and the return to action of experienced trio Dan Machin, Damon Calland and Seb Loram. Now we can look forward with real confidence to the challenge in a higher grade of cricket.
The 2nd X1 had fought hard to stay up the previous season and appeared unlucky in finishing second from bottom this year, having won more matches this time. A 5 point penalty following an administrative error didn’t help us. However, we have been reprieved after two clubs withdrew from the league allowing us to remain in the ‘E’ Division West. Several players shone, notably Seb Loram, Stuart McManus and Ian Sosnowski with the bat and bowlers Joshimon, Harry Jack and Jack Allcock. This season veteran batsman Billy Allcock takes over as captain and with several newcomers lined up to join us we can expect the side to be towards the top end of the table.
Another exciting prospect this season is the re-introduction of our 3rd X1 into the DCL which will be led by stalwart Nick Sleeman in Division ‘H’ Central.
